Since making a debut on the Danish jazz scene with their 2019 album Knob, Svaneborg Kardyb has been blending Nordic folk, Scandinavian jazz and subtle minimalism with electronic textures in their music. Pianist Nikolaj Svaneborg and drummer Jonas Kardyb create an inmate, meditative sound that engages audience with its delicate interplay, layered textures and immersive atmosphere.
Following the release of their debut album, the duo won the Danish Music Awards Jazz in the same year, taking home the New artist of the year and Composer of the year awards. Since then Svaneborg Kardyb has emerged as one of the most influential voices in the contemporary Nordic jazz scene.
Their latest release, Superkilen (2024), is described as the duo's most expansive work yet, immersing the listener in Nordic atmospheres and electronic experimentation. The album is named after Copenhagen's Superkilen park, a symbol of multiculturalism and community, which served as inspiration for the album's compositions.
On stage, the band creates an intimate and meditative atmosphere, where sensitivity and spontaneous interplay provide an unique live experience.
“With instrumental music there are no words, so there's nothing separating everybody – everybody is on the same page, so we can really connect with people. We have a song called ‘Freudesang’, which means ‘The Whistling Tune’. We play it at every show, and we conduct people into whistling along, and everybody can do it.” Svaneborg explains, describing their music and performances, where the audience experiences the quiet intensity of the duo's sound.
