The Sun Ra Arkestra is an American big band that continues to carry forward the musical vision of its founder, composer-pianist-philosopher Sun Ra (1914-1993), for new generations.
Leading his ensemble from the 1950s until his death, the visionary Sun Ra developed a unique sound that combined avant-garde free jazz, cosmic-futuristic funk, and improvisational Afro-American musical traditions. Taking his name from the Egyptian god Ra, the bandleader claimed to be from Saturn. Sun Ra's thinking also reflected strong anti-racism and anti-war sentiments alongside a deep space dimension. Sun Ra and his Arkestra created one of the most expansive discographies in music history, influencing not just jazz and rhythm music, but also popular music.
After the deaths of Sun Ra and his successor John Gilmore, the Arkestra has been led by saxophonist Marshall Allen since 1995. Allen, a close friend of Sun Ra, has been a member of the ensemble since the late 1950s and is regarded as one of the most groundbreaking musicians of the 20th century, a true master of free jazz. Despite his advanced age, Allen continues to lead the Arkestra with unpredictable and energetic live performances, as demonstrated in their 2015 live album Live At Babylon.
