The American band Sleep, well-known in the stoner, doom, and metal scenes, is renowned for their heavy, lava-like, and psychedelic long tracks. Over nearly three decades, Sleep's influence on metal music is undeniable. Their legendary status began with their debut album Volume One (1991), followed by Holy Mountain, which set new standards for the genre. Due to issues related to the release of their third album, Sleep disbanded in 1998, though bassist-vocalist Al Cisneros and guitarist Matt Pike kept busy with their bands OM and High On Fire.
One of Sleep's most significant releases, and a cornerstone of the genre, Jerusalem/Dopesmoker, was eventually released in multiple versions during the band's hiatus in 2003 through various labels. Sleep reunited in 2009 for festival performances, with Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder replacing original drummer Chris Hakius.
After nearly 20 years of anticipation, Sleep fulfilled fans' hopes in the spring of 2018 by releasing their acclaimed fourth album, The Sciences, through Third Man Records. The album features an updated sound for the modern era, while retaining the hypnotic and thundering atmosphere of their earlier work.
