Rodriguez (1942 – 2023) was an American folk musician and songwriter. Rodríguez remained largely unknown in the U.S. during his early career, despite his poignant and politically charged lyrics. However, unbeknownst to him, his music became a phenomenon in South Africa during the 1970s, where he was believed to be a major star. Rodríguez’s rediscovery came in the 1990s through the documentary Searching for Sugar Man (2012), which tells the story of his unknown success and eventual reunion with his South African fans.
