An Icelandic composer-producer and multi-instrumentalist Jóhann Jóhannson, who captivated audiences with his inventiveness and creativity, became known throughout his career for his genre-bending music, which weaves together the formal languages of classical and electronic music, as well as ambient soundscapes. The composer is best remembered for his music for Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario", "Prisoners" and "Arrival", and for his Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning soundtrack for "The Theory of Everything".
The music for "Mandy", starring Panos Cosmatos and Nicolas Cage, was not released until after Jóhannsson's death. Jóhannsson, who pushed his emotional melodies through digital filters, also composed a wealth of music for TV series (including The Handmaid´s Tale and The OA), theatre and dance, and released several solo albums during his career. The sci-fi film "Last and First Men", directed by Jóhannsson and narrated by Tilda Swinton, had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in 2020 to widespread acclaim.
Drone Mass", which premiered in 2015 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and was called a modern oratorio and inspired by minimalism, church music and electronic music, was finally released as an album in 2022.
